2010 REVISED   Management of Ballistic Injuries
     
Validation:   2 years. Lifeskills Medical Award, EIHS Approved, MTA Approved.
     
Course overview:   This course gives specific information regarding the mechanisms, recognition of, and first aid
  management of ballistic injuries. It is suitable for police firearms personnel, firefighters,
  rescue personnel, firearms and ordnance range staff, or anyone who may have to provide
  immediate care for a casualty with blast or projectile injuries. It is designed to supplement
  knowledge and skills to persons already trained to EMT level or equivalent.
   
 
Course length:   2 days. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on Client's own site
subject to suitable training facilities being available.
   
 
Requirements:   All applicants should be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken
at EMT or equivalent standard.
   
 
Course includes:   Dangers associated with hostile environments, common types of ballistic projectiles,
  mechanisms of injury from high/low velocity projectiles and blast, casualty triage & primary
  survey, airway management, oro & naso pharyngeal airways, oxygen administration, control
  of serious bleeding, amputation & avulsion, hypovolaemic shock, chest trauma, abdominal
  trauma, cervical spine immobilisation, management of burns, first aid equipment for ballistic
    incidents.
     
     
NEW 2010   HSE Approved Offshore Medic
     
Validation:   3 years. Lifeskills Medical Award Health & Safety Executive Approved. MTA Approved,
Resuscitation Council (UK) Recognised.
     
Course overview: This course complies with the Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First Aid) Regulations
    1989. On an installation or vessel, offshore medics provide first aid, and treatment of illness,
    which may include acute medical and surgical conditions requiring immediate skilled
  treatment, and an understanding of the complexities and hazards of diving operations.
   
Course length: 20 days (4 x 5 days). Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or
  modular learning.
   
Requirements: Minimum 3 years experience as a Registered General or Enrolled Nurse, a Military Medic Army
 
    CMT, Navy MA, Air Force MA, a State Registered Paramedic or an Operating Department
  Practitioner (fully qualified).
   
 
Course includes:   Suspension trauma, throbolysis, BLS, ALS (UK Resuscitation Council Accredited), IV
  cannulation, intubation, urinary catheterisation, chest drain insertion, ENT conditions, dental
    first aid, ECG recognition, CIEH health & safety, triage, ENT, pharmacology, suturing & wound
    care, emergency psychiatric conditions, communications skills, helicopter medicine.
   
   
2010 REVISED   Emergency Medical Technician - Advanced
     
Validation:   2 years. Lifeskills Medical Award, EIHS Approved, MTA Approved.
     
Course overview:   This course provides intensive knowledge and skills in rapid assessment of the critical trauma
  patient, treatment of shock and hypoxaemia, and rapid transportation to an appropriate
  hospital. It is suitable for healthcare professionals and pre-hospital emergency medical
  service personnel at Emergency Medical Technician level or above.
 
Course length:   5 days. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on Client's own site
    subject to suitable training facilities being available.
     
Requirements:   All applicants should be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken
    at EMT or equivalent standard, and held for a minimum of 1 year.
     
Course includes:   Key concepts of advanced life support provision, patient consent, blood and body fluid
  precautions, advanced evaluation of the incident scene, advanced kinematics of injury,
  advanced assessment of the trauma patient, advanced airway management, shock evaluation
  management & peripheral IV access, paediatric trauma, intra-osseous access and fluid
  replacement, advanced management of head, spinal, chest and abdominal trauma, needle
  thoracentesis, revised GCS & other patient evaluation scales, advanced management of burns
  and extremity trauma, ALS revised protocols, cardiology, 3 lead ECG & manual defibrillation,
  blood glucose testing, altered mental state, breathing disorders, pulmonary embolism,
  emergency child birth, use of incubators, managing dialysis patients, management of
  laryngectomy patients.

Course overview:   This course is gives prehospital providers the advanced education, skills, and confidence they
  need to effectively treat pediatric patients. Developed by the American Academy of
  Paediatrics, the course provides a comprehensive source of prehospital medical information
  for the emergent care of infants and children. The course teaches prehospital professionals
    advanced skills in better assessing and managing ill or injured children. This is a
    comprehensive, innovative, and highly visual course with case-based lectures, live action
    video, hands-on skills stations, and small group scenarios

Requirements:   All applicants should be able to show evidence of Emergency Medical Technician training (or
    an equivalent standard), and held for a minimum of 1 year.
     
Course includes:   Paediatric assessment, child development, airway procedures, spinal stabilization, vascular
    access skills, child and family interaction, children with special health care needs, trauma,
    child maltreatment, respiratory emergencies, emergency delivery and newborn stabilization,
    cardiovascular emergencies, medical emergencies, toxic exposures, sudden infant death
    syndrome (SIDS), death of a child scenario skill practice.
     
     
2010 REVISED   Wilderness First Aid & Remote Areas Casualty Care
     
Validation:   2 years. Lifeskills Medical Award, EIHS Approved, MTA Approved.
     
Course overview:   This course provides specific information on casualty care in remote environments, and
  problems, where access to further medical aid may be several hours away. Suitable for media
  personnel, non-governmental organisation personnel, relief and aid agency workers,
  expedition medics etc, or anyone who may have to provide immediate care for a casualty in
  any remote area, or in an area of extremes of temperature, earthquake, or other natural
  disaster. It is designed to supplement knowledge and skills to persons already trained to EMT
  level or equivalent.
     
Course length:   1 day. Course held at Lifeskills Medical EMS Training Centre Stafford, or on Client's own site
    subject to suitable training facilities being available.
     
Requirements:   All applicants should be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken
    at EMT or equivalent standard.
     
Course includes:   Remote areas environmental considerations, medical support planning & preparation, casualty
    primary survey and triage, airway management, oro & nasopharyngeal airways, serious
    bleeding control , hypovolaemic shock, chest & abdominal trauma, cervical spine
    immobilisation, burns management, rescue & transport considerations, heat illness, cold
    injuries, bites & stings, altitude problems, nutrition & hydration, long term patient assessment
    & monitoring, first aid equipment for remote environments.
     
     
    Advanced Life Support
       
  Validation:   4 years. Resuscitation Council (UK) Award.
   
  Course overview:   This course prepares senior members of a multidisciplinary team to manage peri-arrest
    situations and treat the patient until transfer to a critical care area. The management of
    cardiac arrest situations, including decision making and effective communication with the team
    and the patient’s relatives is included. This course is designed for healthcare professionals
    who would be expected to apply the skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach
    them on a regular basis e.g. A&E, CCU, ICU, HDU, operating theatres, medical admissions
    units, or on the cardiac arrest/medical emergency team and paramedics.

  Requirements:   All applicants must hold a current clinical appointment and professional healthcare qualification
  e.g. medical doctor, RGN, SR paramedic. Candidates must be competent in performing
      effective basic life support.
       
  Course includes:   ALS in perspective, causes & prevention of cardiac arrest, acute coronary syndromes. ALS
  universal treatment algorithm, post resuscitation care, airway management, monitoring,
  rhythm recognition & 12-lead ECG defibrillation (paddles & hands free pads), tachycardias &
  bradycardias, blood gases, cardiac arrest management (CAS Teach), cardiac arrest in special
      circumstances (immersion/submersion, including hypothermia, pregnancy, poisoning, asthma,
      anaphylaxis, hypovolaemia), ethics, DNAR, legal aspects.
