First Person on Scene [FPOS]
Basic

Overview:
This course is an IHCD award, designed to give those involved in pre-hospital care the vital knowledge and techniques necessary to manage the ill or injured casualty within the first few minutes until handover to a medical service.

Entry requirements: None

Course includes: Pre-hospital environment, patient assessment, respiration and airway management, basic life support, defibrillation, circulation and shock, medical and trauma related emergencies.

First Person on Scene [FPOS] Intermediate

Overview:
This course is an IHCD award, designed to give increased knowledge and skills to those involved in pre-hospital care to help enable them to better manage the ill or injured casualty within the first few minutes until handover to a medical service.

Entry requirements:
All applicants should be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken (First Aid at Work or equivalent standard).

Course includes:
Pre-hospital environment and scene management, patient assessment, primary survey, safe moving and handling, respiration and airway management, oro-pharyngeal airways, oxygen supplementation, basic life support adult and paediatric, defibrillation, heart rhythms, circulation and shock, medical and trauma related emergencies, assisting the paramedic.

Driver 1 [D1], Driver 2 [D2]
and Emergency Services
Driver Training

Overview:
This course (residential recommended) at the ALS Training Centre Stafford, will develop driving skills to the highest professional standards, in line with the Ambulance Driving Manual, Highway Code and the Road Traffic Act. By the end of the course, the student should be able to drive an ambulance safely, smoothly, systematically and progressively under all road and traffic conditions. D1 is part of the PTS and Technician training and consists of theoretical knowledge of the Highway Code, Road Traffic Law, and the Ambulance Driving Manual. The largest part of the course is dedicated to the improvement of basic driving skills. D2 is specifically designed for aspects of driving common to both non-emergency and emergency situations. Together with the Ambulance Technician programme, leads to the IHCD Ambulance Technician Award

Entry requirements:
All applicants must hold a current UK driving licence valid.

Course includes:
Observation skills, braking, steering, gear changing, basic implementation of the road craft system of driving, overtaking, corners and bends, reversing and manoeuvring, hazard awareness, motorway driving, night driving, skid avoidance, the ability to assess the need for an emergency response, the ability to drive the vehicle safely to emergencies, the ability to demonstrate the correct attitude when responding to emergencies.

Ambulance Care Assistant [ACA]

Overview:
This course provides knowledge and skills for the safe and effective operation of non-emergency ambulance operation. It includes the IHCD programme for developing the basic responsibilities of the Ambulance care Assistant, the context in which they work, and the boundaries of that role. The course covers the universal care requirements that apply to individuals, and the legislative framework in which ambulance transport care is provided, the importance of the practice of Health & Safety is also covered, and D1 driver training. This course is suitable for persons wanting to join an ambulance service with an ACA qualification.

Entry requirements:
All applicants must be a minimum of 21 years of age, pass arranged health screening, and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks. Additionally, applicants must have held a full UK manual driving licence for a minimum of 2 years, and hold a current UK driving licence.

Course includes:
The training covers the elements of basic first aid, communication systems, administrative policies and procedures, training in specialist topics: caring for the elderly, the infirm and those with special needs. An integral part of the award also includes the Driver Training Programme 1. This is an advanced driver training course, which covers aspects of driving common to non-emergency situations

Ambulance Technician

Overview:
This course (residential recommended) at the ALS Training Centre Stafford is the first part of the development towards IHCD Technician standard. The course consists of 3 modules (D,E & F) and requires the student to complete theoretical and practical assessments set by the IHCD. Full qualification as an IHCD Ambulance Technician is dependent on satisfactory completion of a one year probationary period with an ambulance organisation providing operational duties for an NHS Ambulance Service Trust. This includes a work-based assessment programme, demonstrating competency in all key skills. Lifeskills Medical cannot guarantee after-course probationary placement, but will work with you to assist in such placement.

All applicants must be a minimum of 21 years of age, pass arranged health screening, and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks. Additionally, applicants must have held a full UK manual driving licence for a minimum of 2 years, and hold a current UK driving licence.

Course includes:
In-depth anatomy and physiology covering: respiratory system, cardio vascular system, nervous system, digestive system, reproductive system, skeletal system, recognition and treatment of: respiratory injuries and diseases, cardiac injuries and diseases, nervous system injuries and diseases, digestive system injuries and diseases, skeletal system injuries and diseases, emergency childbirth, ambulance equipment, moving & handling, advanced life support, assisting the paramedic. An important part of Technician training involves developing the behaviour and attitudes required of a member of a uniformed, disciplined service and this is reflected in the high personal standards expected of students while resident at Lifeskills Medical Advanced Life Support Training Centre.

Ambulance Paramedic
[Proposed for 2006]
Overview:
This course (residential recommended) at the ALS Training Centre Stafford leads to the IHCD Paramedic qualification. The course is divided into three modules (G, H, & I) and each module requires the successful completion of written papers and practical assessments set by IHCD. During the first 6 week part of the course the student will study and practise the paramedic skills. Following successful completion of the centre-based training the student will attend a 6 week period of hospital training during which they will be trained and supervised by a Consultant Anaesthetist in the practical skills required of a Paramedic.

Entry requirements:
All applicants must have successfully completed IHCD Technician modules D,E & F, and satisfactorily completed a one year probationary period with an ambulance organisation providing operational duties for an NHS Ambulance Service Trust, and satisfactorily completed the work-based assessment programme, demonstrating competency in all key skills. Additionally, arranged Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced disclosure information will be required, and applicants must hold a current UK driving licence.

Course includes:
In depth anatomy and physiology covering: respiratory system, cardio vascular system, nervous system, reproductive system and obstetrics, paediatrics, recognition and paramedic treatment of: respiratory injuries and diseases, cardiac injuries and diseases, nervous system injuries and diseases, digestive system injuries and diseases, skeletal system injuries and diseases. Trauma, emergency childbirth, paediatrics, advanced life support, intravenous cannulation, intubation, chest decompression, needle crycothyroidotomy, intra osseous infusion, drug administration.
