Emergency First Aid

Overview:
This course provides essential basic knowledge and skills to take charge at the scene of an accident and to provide emergency first aid in the absence of a fully qualified first aider. It is suitable for anyone who wants to improve their knowledge and skills in first aid.

Entry requirements:
None

Course includes:
Incident management, first aid equipment and supplies, simple record keeping, advice on hygiene, hepatitis B, HIV and AIDS, dealing with an unconscious casualty, basic life support, control of bleeding, recognition and treatment of shock, head injuries.

First Aid at Work [FAW]

Overview:
This course is for persons selected to be the recognised first aider in the workplace, and meets the standards required by the Health & Safety Executive to achieve the Certificate of First Aid at Work. This course meets the requirements of the HSE (First Aid) Regulations (1981).

Entry requirements:
None

Course includes:
Legal aspects, risk assessment, fractures, spinal injury, muscle and joint injury, basic life support, care of the unconscious casualty, basic life support, heart attack, angina, epilepsy, diabetes, asthma, shock, poisons, bleeding, crush injuries, casualty examination, transport, head injuries, eye injuries, first aid equipment, record keeping, burns, scalds, chemical burns, electrical burns, hygiene, hepatitis B, HIV and AIDS.

Re-qualification
Overview:
This course is designed to train and re-certificate the First Aid at Work qualification. It is intended for persons who already hold a valid HSE Approved First Aid at Work certificate which is nearing expiry.

All applicants must hold a valid HSE Approved First Aid At Work certificate.

Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services [GEMS] Basic

Overview:
This course is designed to help first aiders and any other emergency care provider to better assess and manage ill, injured, or disabled elderly patients.

Ageing, communicating, carers, older patient assessment and pharmacology, end of life care issues, trauma, immobilisation, neurological emergencies, resuscitation issues, stroke, immobilisation, respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies, abuse and neglect, medication interactions, dementia.

Paediatric First Aid Essentials

Overview:
This course provides essential basic knowledge and skills in correct emergency first aid and medical emergencies for infants and children. It is suitable for any person such as parents, teachers, foster carers, early years carers, childminders, etc. who have contact with children and infants.

Entry requirements:

Course includes:
Care of the unconscious casualty, basic life support, bleeding, choking, shock, head injury, recognition of illness in children, asthma, seizures and febrile convulsions, paediatric medical emergencies including meningitis, croup, sickle-cell anaemia.

 
 
 
 
 
   
   
Paediatric First Aid

Overview:
This course is a BTEC award designed to train and certificate persons in paediatric emergency first aid and medical emergencies. This course meets the criteria for first aid training stipulated by Surestart. It is suitable for those working in early years settings or with children and young people in a health and social care setting.

Course includes:

Automated External Defibrillation [AED] - Competent User

Overview:
This course is to train and certificate persons in the correct use of AED's in accordance with the Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines. It is suitable for anyone who has access to an AED and may respond to a cardiac arrest situation.

Entry requirements:
All applicants must hold a valid HSE approved First Aid at Work certificate.

Course includes:
Chain of survival, requirements of an AED programme, basic life support, protocols and procedures, AED safety precautions, reporting resuscitation attempts.
