Prehospital Trauma Life Support [PHTLS]    Overview:
This course, accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) England, provides intensive knowledge and skills in rapid assessment of the critical trauma patient, treatment of shock and hypoxaemia, and rapid transportation to an appropriate hospital. It is suitable for healthcare professionals and pre-hospital emergency medical service personnel at technician level or above.

Entry requirements:
Applicants should be IHCD technicians, HPC paramedics, RGN’s involved in immediate care, medical practitioners (SHO and above), currently serving military medical personnel, or health care practitioners with evidence of pre-hospital involvement from either an ambulance provider or a hospital. Applicants who do not fulfil this criteria may still be accepted onto and participate fully in the course in an ‘observer’ capacity – they will receive the Lifeskills Medical Award listing all PHTLS modules completed.

Course includes:
Injury prevention, kinetics of trauma, patient assessment and management, airway management and ventilation, thoracic trauma, shock and fluid replacement, abdominal trauma, head and spinal trauma, musculoskeletal trauma, thermal trauma, child trauma, elderly trauma, triage, transport and trauma systems, military medicine.

Incident Management and Operational Response

Overview:
This course carried out on client’s sites only will test and assess procedures and actions of incident managers/commanders for triage prioritising at major incident or multiple injury situations, and assess their overseeing of trauma treatment and rescue techniques. The first aid, or rescue personnel are also assessed in their normal workplace in situations and scenarios prepared by our instructors and using live simulated casualties. Suitable for incident managers/commanders in charge of rescue personnel, and first aid teams or rescue personnel working as a team.

Entry requirements:
None, this course is designed for medium to large organisations that have a number of first aiders or an emergency medical service on site.

Course includes:
Risk assessment and procedures for emergencies, setting up simulated workplace accidents, identifying response times and any procedural problems, assessing rescue and first aid procedures, assessing operational management and leadership of the situation. Full de-briefing after each scenario is given with any vital skills training being given, and recommendations made to improve procedures, management and team-working skills specific to the workplace.

Advanced Medical Life Support [AMLS] Overview:
This course is a practical in-depth study of medical emergencies, where the curriculum is designed to allow for a minimal amount of lecture and an ample amount of scenarios simulating actual hands-on physical assessment of patients. The course is designed to apply critical thinking skills to integrate patho-physiology with the assessment findings of a medical patient, determine and differentiate between actual and potential patient problems, advance the student's ability to conduct a competent medical examination that utilises proper diagnostic skills with critical thinking and interventions, advance the student's ability to utilise problem-solving strategies in interventions and management alternatives and advance the student's ability to communicate the pertinent findings and interventions to the teaching faculty.

Entry requirements:
All applicants should be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of training undertaken at EMT or equivalent standard.

Course includes:
Interactive lectures, teaching and evaluation stations covering: patient assessment, airway management, assessment of shock, dyspnea/respiratory failure, chest pain, altered mental status, abdominal pain.

Advanced Life Support

Overview:
This course builds on the ILS course, and will prepare senior members of a multi-disciplinary team to manage peri-arrest situations and treat the patient until transfer to a critical care area. The complexity and management of cardiac arrest situations, including decision making and effective communication with the team and the patient’s relatives is included. This course is designed for healthcare professionals who would be expected to apply the skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis e.g. A&E, CCU, ICU, HDU, operating theatres, medical admissions units, or on the cardiac arrest/medical emergency team and paramedics.

Entry requirements:
All applicants must hold a current clinical appointment and professional healthcare qualification e.g. medical doctor, RGN, IHCD paramedic. It is expected that all candidates are competent in performing basic life support (BLS) and this must be achieved prior to attending the ALS course.

Course includes:
Sick patients structured approach advanced life support in perspective, causes and prevention of cardiac arrest, acute coronary syndromes. ALS universal treatment algorithm, post resuscitation care, airway management, monitoring, rhythm recognition and 12-lead ECG defibrillation (paddles and hands free adhesive pads), tachycardias and bradycardias, blood gases, cardiac arrest management (CASTeach), cardiac arrest in special circumstances (immersion/submersion, including hypothermia, pregnancy, poisoning, asthma, anaphylaxis, hypovolaemia), ethics, DNAR, legal aspects.
