PHTLS and AMLS course Emergency Medical Technician Advanced
[EMT-A]

Overview:
This course provides increased knowledge and skills to assess and manage trauma and medical emergencies to an advanced level in the pre-hospital environment. It comprises both the NAEMT Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course and the Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) course. On successful completion of both courses taken together, the Lifeskills Medical EMT Advanced (EMT-A) certificate is awarded. This course is suitable for persons who have to manage critical trauma or medical patients as part of their rescue or medical role. It is a logical development from the EMT or FPOS course.

Entry requirements:
All applicants should hold as a minimum, a valid IHCD FPOS, or recognised EMT certificate or equivalent.

Course includes:
Injury prevention, kinetics of trauma, patient assessment and management, airway management and ventilation, thoracic trauma, shock and fluid replacement, abdominal trauma, head and spinal trauma, musculoskeletal trauma, thermal trauma, child trauma, elderly trauma, triage, transport and trauma systems, military medicine, interactive lectures, teaching and evaluation stations covering: patient assessment, airway management, assessment of shock, dyspnea/respiratory failure, chest pain, altered mental status, abdominal pain.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
   
   
Paediatric Education for
Prehospital Professionals
[PEPP] Advanced

Pediatrics Award

Overview:
This course represents a comprehensive source of pre-hospital medical information for the emergency care of infants and children. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is a program designed specifically to teach pre-hospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children. It is suitable for paramedics, EMT's, doctors and nurses.

Entry requirements:
IHCD Technician, IHCD Paramedic, EMT Advanced, Medical Doctor, RGN.

Course includes:
Paediatric assessment, respiratory emergencies, airway obstruction, paediatric oral and nasopharyngeal airways, bvm ventilation, endotracheal intubation, tracheostomy management, intravenous IV access, intra-osseous infusion, cardiovascular emergencies, spinal immobilisation, sudden infant death syndrome, death of a child, child maltreatment, special healthcare needs, medical emergencies, trauma, toxic emergencies, children in disasters, emergency delivery and newborn stabilisation, medico-legal and ethical considerations, transportation considerations.

 
 
 
 
 
 
   
   
Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services [GEMS] Advanced Overview:
This course provides increased knowledge and skills to help EMT’s and any other emergency care provider to better assess and manage ill, injured, or disabled
elderly patients.

Entry requirements:
None

Course includes:
Aging and changes with age, communicating with older patients and their caregivers,
older patient assessment and interview, end of life care issues, musculoskeletal disorders and falls, trauma, immobilisation, neurological emergencies, resuscitation issues, stroke, immobilisation, respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies, elder abuse and neglect, pharmacology and medication interactions, dementia, delirium,
intravenous therapy.

Driver 1 [D1], Driver 2 [D2] and Emergency Services Driver Training
  
Overview:
This course at the ALS Training Centre Stafford, will develop driving skills to the highest professional standards, in line with the Ambulance Driving Manual, Highway Code and the Road Traffic Act. By the end of the course, the student should be able to drive an ambulance safely, smoothly, systematically and progressively under all road and traffic conditions. D1 is part of the PTS and Technician training, and consists of theoretical knowledge of the Highway Code, Road Traffic Law, and the Ambulance Driving Manual. The largest part of the course is dedicated to the improvement of basic driving skills. D2 is specifically designed for aspects of driving common to both non-emergency and emergency situations. Together with the Ambulance Technician programme, leads to the IHCD Ambulance Technician Award.

Entry requirements:
All applicants must hold a current UK driving licence, which ideally should include DVLA categories C1 and D1.

Course includes:
Observation skills, braking, steering, gear changing, basic implementation of the road craft system of driving, overtaking, corners and bends, reversing and manoeuvring, hazard awareness, motorway driving, night driving, skid avoidance, the ability to assess the need for an emergency response, the ability to drive the vehicle safely to emergencies, the ability to demonstrate the correct attitude when responding to emergencies.
