Emergency Medical Technician [EMT]	Overview: This course provides increased knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of medical and trauma emergencies in the pre-hospital environment, using techniques and equipment beyond the scope of basic first aid. It is suitable for any person who may have to manage medical or trauma patients in the pre-hospital care role, in particular - emergency medical service and rescue personnel, on-site company ambulance staff and first aiders who wish to extend their basic skills. This course is accepted by IHCD for personnel who wish to instruct on the IHCD FPOS course. Entry requirements: All applicants should be able to show evidence of first aid training undertaken (First Aid at Work or equivalent standard). Course includes: Mechanism of injury, airway management, oxygen and entonox administration, patient assessment, primary and secondary assessment, vital signs monitoring. Angina and myocardial infarction, paediatric trauma, chest abdominal and limb trauma, cardiogenic and hypovolaemic shock, application of splints, head and spinal trauma, spinal immobilisation, management of asthma diabetes and seizures, management of a cerebrovascular accident.

First Person On Scene [FPOS] - Intermediate	Overview: This course is an IHCD award, designed to give increased knowledge and skills to those involved in pre-hospital to help enable them to better manage the ill or injured casualty within the first few minutes until handover to a medical service. Entry requirements: All applicants should be able to show evidence of first aid training undertaken (First Aid at Work or equivalent standard). Course includes: Pre-hospital environment and scene management, patient assessment, primary survey, safe moving and handling, respiration and airway management, oropharyngeal airways, oxygen supplementation, basic life support adult and paediatric, defibrillation, heart rhythms, circulation and shock, medical and trauma related emergencies, assisting the paramedic.

Immediate Life Support	Overview: This course provides increased knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of basic life support, airway management and safe defibrillation. It is designed to standardise existing in-hospital training undertaken by Resuscitation Officers, and to train healthcare personnel to participate as members of the cardiac arrest team. It is also suitable for healthcare personnel required to manage patients in cardiac arrest until the arrival of trauma trained personnel or the cardiac arrest team. Entry requirements: All applicants should be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken (First Aid at Work or equivalent standard). Course includes: Introduction of cardiac arrest rhythms, universal algorithms, basic life support, airway management, ventilation techniques, drugs delivery.

Medical Gases (O2 and N2O) Administration - Competent User	Overview: This course provides the necessary knowledge and skills to enable the safe administration of oxygen and nitrous oxide (entonox) by emergency medical service and rescue personnel as part of their first aid, rescue, or medical role. Entry requirements: All applicants should be able to show evidence of first aid training undertaken (First Aid at Work or equivalent standard). Course includes: Basic life support, basic airway management, equipment checks and assembly, oxygen and nitrous oxide administration procedures and delivery systems, risk assessment, hazards precautions and contra indications when using oxygen and nitrous oxide, using manual and automatic aspirators, administration procedures.

Hostile Environments and Ballistic Injuries	Overview: This course gives specific information regarding the mechanisms, recognition of, and first aid management of ballistic injuries. It is suitable for persons such as police firearms personnel, firefighters, rescue personnel, firearms and ordnance range staff, or anyone who may have to provide immediate care for a casualty with blast or projectile injuries. It is designed to supplement knowledge and skills to persons already trained to EMT level or equivalent. Entry requirements: All applicants should be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken at EMT or equivalent standard. This is not a general open course, but is run for groups of 6 or more persons. Course includes: Dangers associated with hostile environments, common types of ballistic projectiles, mechanisms of injury from high/low velocity projectiles and blast, casualty triage and primary survey, airway management, oro and nasopharyngeal airways, oxygen administration, control of serious bleeding, amputation and avulsion, hypovolaemic shock, chest trauma, abdominal trauma, cervical spine immobilisation, management of burns, first aid equipment for ballistic incidents.

Remote Areas Casualty Care	Overview: This course provides specific information on casualty care in remote environments and the associated inherent problems, where access to further medical aid may be several hours away. It is designed to supplement knowledge and skills to persons already trained to EMT level or equivalent. It is suitable for media personnel, journalists, non-governmental organisation personnel, relief and aid agency workers, expedition medics etc, or anyone who may have to provide immediate care for a casualty in a remote area (domestic or abroad) or in an area of extremes of temperature, earthquake, or other natural disaster. Entry requirements: All applicants should be able to show, as a minimum, evidence of first aid training undertaken at EMT or equivalent standard. This is not a general open course, but is run for groups of 6 or more persons. Course includes: Environmental considerations in remote areas, planning and preparation of medical support, casualty triage and primary survey, basic airway management, oral and nasopharyngeal airways, control of serious bleeding, hypovolaemic shock, chest and abdominal trauma, cervical spine immobilisation, management of burns, immobilisation of injuries, rescue and transport considerations, heat illness, cold injuries, bites and stings, altitude problems, nutrition and hydration, long term patient monitoring and assessment, first aid equipment for remote environments.
